This was my final project piece for my Illustrator class, in which we were to use the gradient mesh tool to render a "metallic surface". I went a bit beyond the assignment requirements. This was my first time using the gradient mesh tool. I refined a lot of details though by just using regular gradients/blends. The entire picture was done in Illustrator, including the lightbeams (which came out a bit more intense than I'd like, but oh well).
I chose to render the Lexus LS hybrid cause, well, I like Lexus. It's based off a real photo, and I tried to get it as close to the original as possible.
Overall, I probably spent 80 to 100 hours doing this. I've never worked on one piece for so long before, and while I'm tired of looking at it, I can say I'm proud of my own work. And that's something I don't say often.
It's so hard to believe this one's made in vectors! Very beautiful.
I really like the smooth, fitting gradients. The only thing I would have to note about are the "sparkles" coming off the lamps - it's as if they're a little out of place.

And yes, you're right about the lightbeams. Although they too were done entirely in Illustrator, I think I overdid them (it's supposed to look like the LED headlights are on). Likely that specific effect would have been better done in Photoshop, with a bit less emphasis than I gave them here.

Thanks! You know the odd part is I feel kind of like trying to do another one of these like this, even though it took so many hours to create this one. Perhaps because the torture of those 100+ hours has faded since from my mind

Yes, I think I will at some point. The tricky part is figuring out which car to do next. I'm leaning towards an Audi A4 right now, as its the current car I drool over. But I might wait to see what the new A8 looks like when it's revealed, before I decide.
